Why Breastfeed?

Acknowledging there exists situations where breastfeeding isn’t an option or where formula might be temporarily or permanently necessary, we also don’t want you to have later regrets regarding how you choose to feed your baby simply because you didn’t know some of the facts. The evidenced-based information is provided so you can make informed choices.

We’ve all heard “breast is best” but why? One of the super cool things is each mom produces milk unique to her baby, which changes over time as baby grows and depending on what baby needs. No formula can do that! And breastfed babies are usually healthier. Studies show babies who receive any breastmilk have

  • Lower rates of ear infections
  • Less respiratory infections
  • A decrease in persistent or severe diarrhea
  • Lower risk of asthma
  • Less cases of eczema
  • Lower incidence of Type I and Type II diabetes
  • Lower risk of childhood leukemia
  • Decreased childhood obesity
  • Reduction of SIDS

The protection of breastmilk is dose-dependent, meaning the more exclusively a baby up to 6 months is breastfed and the longer a baby receives breastmilk overall (2 or more years being the current recommendations) the better the outcomes will be. For instance, SIDS is reduced by 40% if baby is breastfed at least 2 months, 60% if breastfed at least 4 months, and 64% if breastfed at least 6 months.

Moms have improved health outcomes when they breastfeed their babies, too! Breastfeeding has been shown to help moms with

  • Lower risk of breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers
  • Decreased hypertension
  • Less type II diabetes
  • Less thyroid cancer
  • Reduction of osteoporosis later in life
  • Decreased postpartum bleeding
  • Possible delayed return of periods
  • May even help you lose the pregnancy weight faster!
